The Turkish Ministry of Defense reiterated Ankara’s consistent position in favor of a two-state solution in Cyprus, commenting on reports regarding a new UN plan for the Cyprus issue.
The spokesperson for the Turkish Ministry of Defense, Vice Admiral Zeki Aktürk, stated that in recent days, starting with the Greek Cypriot press, that the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy has drafted a new plan, which is to be discussed with the two sides in Cyprus.
Aktürk argued that a “permanent, just, and sustainable solution” can be achieved only on the basis of two states, with the affirmation, as he stated, of “sovereign equality and the equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people.”
“No initiative that ignores this fundamental reality can reflect the will of the Turkish Cypriot people or ensure lasting stability in the region,” he said.
The spokesperson for the Turkish Ministry of Defense noted that Turkey’s position on the Cyprus issue is “clear, unambiguous, and unwavering,” adding that Ankara will not accept any initiative that, in Turkey’s view, disregards the rights of Turkish Cypriots or disrupts the balance on the island.
Referring to the pseudo-state, Aktürk said that “the security of the TRNC is Turkey’s security,” adding that Ankara, as a guarantor power, will continue to protect the security, peace, and prosperity of the Turkish Cypriots.
“Just as yesterday, so too today and tomorrow, our resolve is unwavering. Turkey will continue to be a guarantor of peace, security, and stability in Cyprus, within the framework of the rights and responsibilities arising from international agreements and international law,” he added.
