The United Nations global conference on climate change, to be held in Antalya from November 9 to 20, will be attended not only by Nikos Christodoulides but also by Tufan Erh, who was invited by the Turkish president in a personal letter. The issue is not the two of them being in the same setting, but rather that the Turkish Cypriot leader is leaving the door open for developments in the Cyprus issue
“From what we’ve learned from the press, Mr. Christodoulides also stated that he will attend the event, as is customary. As we have always stated, diplomacy and dialogue are positive elements.”
Given that the conference is taking place under the auspices of the UN, Erhurman has not been invited as the head of the pseudo-state but in his capacity as a Turkish Cypriot leader. It should be noted that Erdogan initially excluded Nicos Christodoulides. However, following a stormy behind-the-scenes exchange, Turkey was forced to send an invitation to the President of the Republic.
Essentially, nothing
The hourglass is running out for Antonio Guterres, and hopes for meaningful progress on the Cyprus issue are fading. The two leaders have met 12 times to date, including yesterday’s meeting. The only thing that can be described as progress are small steps toward building trust, such as the bicommunal peace festival in Pyla, which the leaders will attend on Saturday.
“We do not underestimate the obstacles, but we are focusing on how to overcome them.”
Otherwise, it will be difficult to hold a five-party meeting by December.
“What we all agree on is that expanding the talks simply for the sake of expansion is not an end in itself.”
As for whether the opening of the enclosed city of Famagusta and its port was discussed, the Greek Cypriot side believes there is still a lot of work to be done.
