"Unsinkable Aircraft Carrier": The Turks Are Dragging Cyprus Into the Dispute with Israel; Analysts' Messages to Erdogan

Saar's Response to Fidan

“From Turkey’s perspective, Cyprus is an unsinkable aircraft carrier. In other words, in our strategy for the ‘Blue Homeland’ and in our defense, Cyprus is an unsinkable aircraft carrier, and no matter what happens, it is impossible for Turkey to compromise on its rights here. In this case, the sovereign existence and equal presence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are essential for Turkey on the international stage. This is part of the national cause.”

One after another, Turkish analysts are calling on Erdogan not to back down even a single step on the Cyprus issue.

Turkish television reports frame the Cyprus issue as part of the Turkey-Greece rivalry, and of course, somewhere in the middle, Israel appears…

“You know, Israel is trying to use the Greek Cypriot side as a base. It has made many investments. Specifically, it has leased the port of Limassol. These Zionist companies are managing this region; they’ve also entered Gaza, and have effectively created a triangle to control and seize all the hydrocarbons in the region.”

In the face of this new outburst from the Turkish media, the response comes… from Israel itself.

This comes in response to statements by Hakan Fidan that Israel does not want peace in the region.

“We know very well that if we lose focus on the Palestinian issue, then everything happening in Gaza, at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the issue of Jerusalem, and in the West Bank will all become much easier for Israel.”
Hakan Fidan – Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs

“It is unbelievable that this criticism is coming from a country that has been violating Syrian sovereignty for decades, and maintains troops not only in Syria and Iraq, but also in occupied northern Cyprus. What Fidan wants is for Israel to stop protecting itself against threats. That’s not going to happen.”
Gideon Saar—Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs

Preparations Facing Obstacles

Against this geopolitical backdrop, Christodoulides and Erhurman are preparing for the August 26 meeting.

The Turkish Cypriot leader reiterated that while he may meet with Raffaele Fito, he does not accept the European Union’s presence at the negotiating table.

“Southern Cyprus has veto power. This makes it impossible for the European Union to act impartially in any case.”
Tufan Erhurman

However, Erhurman announced his intention to travel to Brussels and other European capitals in the near future because, as he said, he has much to discuss with the EU.
