Nikos Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurman hope to send a clear political message regarding developments in the Cyprus issue through their planned attendance this coming Saturday at a bicommunal fto be held in the mixed village of Pyla. This was reported on the Alpha News program by Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou, noting that the event was an initiative of the Greek Cypriot side, as were the upcoming meetings between the two leaders and the members of the Technical Committees.
At the same time, Mr. Menelaou acknowledged that the agreements regarding Pyla remain at a standstill and that differing approaches persist regarding the “common understanding” regarding the issue of building a new road, on the one hand, and the opening of new plots of land, on the other.
“We are not pursuing these issues to replace the more substantive ones on which progress is being made. A great deal of important work has been done to document the points of convergence; it is ready. It is being held up by the Turkish Cypriot side’s reluctance to take the next step and share it with all parties involved. But we will continue.”
