The United Nations issued a joint statement following the meeting between the President of the Republic and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.
The meeting lasted more than 2.5 hours, with the President of the Republic stating that we are on the right track, as he left the offices of the United Nations Good Offices Mission in the buffer zone.
As stated in the joint communiqué, during their meeting the two leaders reviewed progress regarding the way forward, as outlined during the recent visit of the United Nations Secretary-General to the island, and agreed to intensify their meetings and meet once a week—and more frequently, if circumstances require.
The joint communiqué reads as follows:
“The Greek Cypriot leader, Nicos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman, held a constructive meeting today under the auspices of the United Nations at the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission.
The two leaders reaffirmed their deep appreciation for United Nations Secretary-General, His Excellency Mr. António Guterres, for his recent visit to the island and for his continued support and commitment to efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem.
During their meeting, they reviewed progress regarding the way forward, as outlined during the United Nations Secretary-General’s recent visit to the island, and agreed to intensify their meetings and meet once a week—and more frequently, if circumstances require.
They also agreed to announce tomorrow the members of the Steering Committee of the Civil Society Advisory Body.
