“Comeback” for Mavrogiannis in the 2028 Presidential Election? The first moves on the political chessboard and the key figures

Who wants whom by their side, and what do the initial polls show?
ALPHANEWSLIVE

While the political maneuvering continues both in the spotlight and behind the scenes, the first polls for the presidential election are providing an initial indication. According to a Reporter poll conducted in the event that Synagermos fields its own candidate, Annita Dimitriou maintains the lead with 46%. Averof Neophytou follows with 35%, while Giorgos Pamboridis trails with 7%. 9% of respondents believe that none of the three should run.

Nearly one-third of DISY supporters in the survey would support Nicos Christodoulides, that is, 26%, while 58% believe that DISY should enter the race with its own candidate. Thirteen percent favor the party collaborating with other political forces to field a joint candidate.

Intention to Announce

Andreas Mavroyiannis appears ready for a comeback, banking on the support of AKEL. He will make his final decision after gauging his support and first consulting with parties that might back him. He is sharing his thoughts on Alpha TV.

“AKEL is reaching out by focusing on ALMA, which supported Stefanos Stefanou for Speaker of the House. Odysseas Michaelides does not rule out running as an independent and is not enthusiastic about Mavroyiannis’s support. According to reports, Irini Charalambidou also supports this view, as she had not endorsed his candidacy in 2023 either.”

The Conditions for a Coalition

The centrist camp is in full swing ahead of the elections, with Nikolas Papadopoulos backing a joint candidate with DIPA and EDEK, though it cannot be ruled out that this candidate might be Nikos Christodoulides. According to Alpha News, Nikolas Papadopoulos and Marios Karoyian are set to hold another meeting in September.

Since July, DIKO has proposed, as an alternative, the creation of a new political platform that would bring together DIKO and DIPA.  DIPA, however, appears disappointed, since, according to sources, the DIKO president urged Nicos Christoulides this past summer to remove DIPA ministers from the government. In fact, the issue was discussed between the two leaders.

ELAM will not make any decisions before its internal party elections in November. Discussions are centered on Christos Christou running as an independent, though a coalition with Nikos Christodoulides has not been ruled out.

In EDEK, decisions will be made in the new year following the party’s electoral convention and a comprehensive “overhaul” of the leadership.
