The President of the Democratic Alarm, Ms. Annita Dimitriou, met today in Athens with the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as part of efforts to further strengthen cooperation and coordination between the Democratic Alarm and New Democracy, as well as between Cyprus and Greece, on critical issues of mutual interest.

The meeting focused on developments regarding the Cyprus issue, the Cyprus–Greece electricity interconnection (GSI), regional cooperation, as well as defense and security issues.

In a statement following the meeting, Ms. Dimitriou emphasized the importance of Cyprus and Greece acting in unison to more effectively defend their national interests and address the challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Particular emphasis was placed on the need to utilize all available European instruments in the face of Turkish intransigence. The DISY President stressed that Turkey cannot claim to upgrade its relations with the European Union and participate in the European SAFE program, while it continues to illegally occupy European territory and provoke tensions in the Aegean. As he pointed out, European benefits for Turkey must be linked to specific commitments and tangible progress.

Regarding the Cyprus–Greece electricity interconnection (GSI), Ms. Dimitriou reiterated the strategic importance of the project, both for ending Cyprus’s energy isolation and for strengthening Europe’s energy security. She also emphasized that, through a common strategy and by leveraging regional alliances, the Turkish objections affecting the project’s implementation must be addressed.

The meeting also addressed the illegal Turkey-Libya memorandum, with the DISY President noting that there was agreement on the need to intensify efforts to condemn it in all international and European forums, including the European People’s Party.

Finally, Ms. Dimitriou emphasized that through a common strategy, determination, and the strengthening of trilateral and multilateral cooperation, Cyprus and Greece can capitalize on their geostrategic position and strengthen their role in regional developments.

The following is the full text of the statement by the President of the Democratic Alarm Party, Ms. Annita Dimitriou, following her meeting with the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis:

Greece and Cyprus are moving forward in unison. Because that is how we can most effectively defend our national interests.

We reaffirmed this with our friend, the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during the productive and substantive meeting we held, which focused on major issues. The Cyprus issue, the electricity interconnection (GSI), regional cooperation, defense, and security.

In the face of Turkey’s intransigence, Greece and Cyprus must make use of every available European instrument. Turkey cannot claim to upgrade its relations with the European Union and seek participation in SAFE while it illegally occupies European territory and provokes tensions in the Aegean. European benefits must be linked to specific commitments and tangible progress.

At the same time, we emphasized that the Cyprus–Greece electricity interconnection (GSI) is a project of strategic importance. It concerns ending Cyprus’s energy isolation, but also, more broadly, Europe’s energy security, while simultaneously strengthening our countries’ position on the energy map of the Eastern Mediterranean. Through strategy and alliances, Turkish objections must be set aside.

As for the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum, we agreed that we must make intensive efforts to ensure it is condemned by all the forums in which we participate, including within the European People’s Party.

With a common strategy and determination, we have the opportunity to strengthen our geopolitical footprint and capitalize on our geostrategic position, including through the trilateral and multilateral partnerships we have been building with other countries for years.
