"No deal was struck," responds Democratic Alarm President Annita Dimitriou to the statement by former DISY President Averof Neophytou regarding a dinner at a well-known fish tavern in Nicosia, where an agreement was reached regarding her election as Speaker of the House and his support for her in the 2028 presidential election.
In remarks to reporters following the conclusion of the Political Bureau meeting, Ms. Dimitriou, when asked to comment on the dinner, stated that “Yes, I was present, but—as Mr. Neophytou himself said in my presence—no specific commitment was made, there was no discussion on this matter, and he never even asked for it himself,” emphasizing that “this must come to an end.”

She also noted that “our concern is DISY, not any individual, and this party is above any individual.”
Meanwhile, commenting on the Political Bureau’s decisions, Ms. Dimitriou emphasized that “there are no opponents—we are members of the same team, and we become wiser through what we hear. By listening to our leaders, we reflected on the issues, reached a unanimous decision, that’s what matters, and now we will move forward in strict accordance with our bylaws and procedures,” emphasizing that everyone stands behind whoever is chosen.
“It is our duty to ensure that the procedures are followed. Whatever the outcome, we will be there, united, to move forward.”
