The Democratic Alarm had received no information regarding the Cabinet’s intention to appoint Nikos Tornaritis as Special Political Envoy of the President of the Republic for the Kin Asian and African countries. This was revealed on the Alpha News program by DISY Deputy Spokesperson Xenia Konstantinou, explaining that Mr. Tornaritis had already agreed to accept the appointment when he informed party President Annita Dimitriou in writing, who was on a parliamentary mission to Andorra at the time, while the matter was on the agenda of the Council of Ministers.
Ms. Konstantinou noted that Mr. Tornaritis has a long history with DISY, having served for 25 years as a member of parliament and Vice President of the party, and for a decade held the position of Parliamentary Spokesperson. She clarified, however, that he currently holds no party office, beyond his participation, as a former member of Parliament, in broader party bodies. When asked whether Tornaritis’s appointment has political implications, the DISY deputy spokesperson acknowledged that the choice sends a specific political message.
“Obviously, this also sends a political message, and we understand that, but he made that decision himself.”
The Karousos-Diplaros Feud in Focus
When asked to comment on the alleged dispute between Efthymios Diplaros and Yiannis Karousos during a DISY Communications Team teleconference—which involved harsh words, raised voices, and tension, Ms. Konstantinou acknowledged that public disagreements create problems, stating that “much of what you describe certainly does not help.”
At the same time, she emphasized that Pindarou has a difficult road ahead of her, as she is called upon to overcome internal party disagreements while also managing significant political challenges and preparing for the upcoming presidential election. As he noted, DISY has experience in managing crises and internal disputes, expressing his conviction that the common goal remains non-negotiable.
“Our goal is shared,” he said, adding that the party’s objective in the coming months is to present a comprehensive political plan, with clear priorities and proposals for “better, bolder, and more effective governance.”
Ms. Konstantinou pointed out that, according to the Democratic Alarm’s bylaws, the selection of the candidate for the Presidency of the Republic will take place through internal party elections at the grassroots level.
