In remarks made in Menoiko at noon on Saturday, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, addressed reports regarding the purchase by the Republic of Cyprus of an armored limousine at a total cost of hundreds of thousands of euros for the needs of the PresidencyFollowing the “controversy” surrounding the purchase of the new armored limousine, the President clarified that he himself had not been informed of the intention to purchase the vehicle.
Specifically, when asked to comment on the issue regarding the purchase of a new armored limousine, the President of the Republic told reporters, “I learned this morning from the press about this intention to purchase it. I was not aware of such a thing.
No President should be privy to security matters or to how the relevant state agencies decide to proceed to ensure certain matters.
And I am certain that neither the Prime Minister of Greece, nor the Prime Minister of Israel, nor the President of Egypt, nor the President of France is aware of this.
This was certainly a deliberate leak from the House of Representatives—since that’s where the recipient was, as I saw in today’s news reports—with the obvious aim of undermining the President of the Republic. My message is that such actions undermine the credibility of all of us who are temporarily participating in the public life of this country. And while some may believe that such leaks will help them achieve their goals, I am certain that, at the end of the day, this will have a negative impact on those who took the initiative to do so.
And on the topics of safety and cars—an issue I often bring up with my colleagues. In fact, let me tell you about one incident. Once, I used my personal car with my young daughter, precisely because, as a father, I wanted to have that personal moment, and I received very serious criticism from those responsible—not for the security of Nikos Christodoulides, but for the safety of the President of the Republic. So, at the end of the day, this kind of populist approach has exactly the opposite effect from what those who use it intend, which is to undermine the President of the Republic.”
