We will not be swayed by games or provocations; we will continue to keep the “people” informed in the right way and in a timely manner, and we will never compromise on our seriousness, patience, composure, and determination,” Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman stated in a post today on social media, in response to the ongoing discussion and reactions within the Turkish Cypriotcommunity regarding reports in the Greek Cypriot press about a new settlement plan. The Turkish Cypriot leader points out that the debate, which has been ongoing for days, is based on an article written by a Greek Cypriot journalist, which is being accepted as entirely true —referring, without naming names, to the article by Dionysis Dionysiou in “Politis.”
Referring to the comments being made, the Turkish Cypriot leader said that there are those who are wondering who leaked the information, how accurate it is, and whether the leak also conveyed unfounded messages that would specifically provoke Turkish Cypriots and reassure Greek Cypriots, such as “Don’t worry, you’ll get what you want!”
Mr. Erhurman writes that no one doubts that any proposal to which the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey, as the guarantor state, do not say “yes,” will not be implemented. There are those, he continued, who doubt that the Turkish Cypriot side, as the side that wants a solution, will not follow a course that would make a solution impossible, trap them once again in endless negotiations, jeopardize equality, security, and the rights of the Turkish Cypriots, or ultimately set them back to square one, and that they will not deviate from the methodology and principles they have established.
“Or perhaps some are actually hoping, ‘This is our chance; maybe we can steer them away from the methodology and principles they have been explaining relentlessly for the past three years? There is no room for doubt or excitement. It’s all in vain!”
Tufan Erhurman says he won’t fall victim to these games. “The discussions don’t bother us at all. We’re watching them closely. We have enough intelligence, experience, and knowledge to understand who is trying to do what, who is trying to contribute in good faith, and who has other agendas! We’re continuing this process from where we left off, just as we began, and we’ll keep going in the same way.” “The people” must be confident, he concluded.
