No 3+1 or 5+1 meeting on the Cyprus issue is expected to take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, said UN Secretary-General António Guterres, noting that “there is still a lot of work to be done.”
When asked by CNA during the customary press conference before the start of the High-Level Week, whether, following his communication with his Personal Envoy, he believes that the conditions he had set in July for a possible 3+1 or even 5+1 meeting on the sidelines of the, Mr. Guterres said that such a meeting “will not take place on the sidelines of the General Assembly.” He noted that “there is still a lot of work to be done.”
At the same time, he emphasized that the United Nations remains committed to continuing efforts to achieve progress on the Cyprus issue.
“We are determined to move things forward, and we are determined to do everything possible to make this happen once the conditions for a successful meeting are met,” he said.
He added that any new meeting must be prepared in a way that creates real prospects for a positive outcome, noting that “we cannot repeat the mistakes of the past.”
