The future credibility of the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority hangs by a "thread," following the decision to terminate the investigation into the high-profile “black van” case. This is the view of attorney Simos Angelidis, who spoke on the Alpha News program about a “turning point” that immediately requires the Authority to launch an investigation, since, based on the evidence, there is no obstacle to moving the case forward. He noted that there is a mistaken impression that the Authority must request permission to conduct an investigation, when in fact there is simply an informal understanding with the Legal Service to be notified in the event of a parallel criminal investigation.
“Since it is an independent Authority and determines that a matter involves corruption, it may proceed to conduct its own investigation.”
Mr. Angelides noted that the relevant laws demonstrate that the Anti-Corruption Authority currently faces no obstacles to conducting an investigation, however, it is up to the Authority itself to decide whether or not to proceed.
