Anastasiades' Responses Divide Opinion: What DISY, AKEL, and DIKO Are Saying Following the Former President's Interview

How are they reacting to the statements, and what is each party calling for?

The fierce confrontation between DISY, AKEL, and DIKO over the “Mafia State” following Nicos Anastasiades’ press conference, with DISY calling for the completion of the police investigation, AKEL calling on Anastasiades to take responsibility, and DIKO arguing that the current leadership of the Legal Service is an obstacle to the administration of justice.

DISY Deputy President Efthymios Diplaros argued that the entire 3,000-page report must be made public so that the public is aware of every detail, emphasizing that the party’s long-standing position is one of complete transparency and “everything out in the open.”

He commented that Mr. Anastasiades responded “point by point” to all the allegations in Makarios Drousiotis’s book, arguing that none of the author’s initial claims are corroborated by the report.

“There are some potential offenses—seven in total—and regarding these seven potential offenses, President Anastasiades has responded, refuting these allegations with supporting evidence, but also by another very important fact: that he was not questioned about these specific offenses. He was questioned and responded regarding everything mentioned in the specific book written against him, but he was not questioned about the charges he faces.”

He emphasized that the seven alleged offenses attributed to the former President fall under the “balance of probabilities” and not at the level of proof, while noting that Mr. Anastasiades was never questioned about them during the investigation.

He accused AKEL of attempting to destabilize the country and of engaging in “people’s courts,” recalling that the left-wing party had failed to respect findings in the past, such as those regarding Mari.

AKEL Central Committee member Marina Savva focused on the institutional dimension of corruption, arguing that a clean sweep cannot be achieved without taking responsibility for the decade of Anastasiades’s governance.

“This is the problem, and I am under the impression that reform will come first and foremost when there is a courageous assumption of political and moral responsibility for all these scandals that are plaguing and are shaking both Cypriot society and the Cypriot economy. And second, when the way is paved for an impartial and objective investigation—and that path involves the removal of the heads of the legal service and the establishment of procedures that will prevent such incidents in the future.”

He stated that Mr. Anastasiades’s line of defense is that “everyone is lying,” from international networks to the Anti-Corruption Authority. AKEL insists on the resignation of the heads of the Legal Service, considering it a necessary prerequisite for an objective investigation.

It also notes that, regardless of the legal aspect, the majority of society believes that the alleged events took place.

DIKO MP Chrysis Pantelidis described the current situation as the most serious institutional crisis in recent years, focusing on the functioning of the Legal Service.

He argued that the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General have effectively “resigned without realizing it,” as their self-recusal is leading to the neutralization of the Legal Service in a landmark case.

“The two prosecutors should resign so that people can be appointed who are capable of doing what prosecutors do in other countries. They should build cases, bring them to trial, and win them. Mind you, the fact that they cannot perform their duties does not mean that recusal is sufficient. It means they must resign and allow—I repeat—the legal system to function without hindrance.”

He argued that individuals should be appointed who can serve as “standard-bearers” in the effort to combat corruption and bring cases to justice.

He emphasized that the issue is political, not constitutional, noting that historically, presidents have avoided appointing personal friends or their ministers to such key positions.
