In a related statement, the Democratic Party welcomes the official appointment of the Executive Vice President of the European Commission, Raffaele Fito, as the Commission’s Special Representative for Cyprus.
It notes, among other things, that the formal establishment of this role lends greater political and institutional weight to the European Commission’s involvement and creates the conditions for a more coordinated and active contribution by the European Commissionin efforts to resume negotiations.
It is emphasized that the European Commission’s contribution must ensure that any agreement is fully compatible with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, the European acquis, and the principles and values of the European Union.
It adds that the formalization of Raffaele Fito’s role is a positive development, provided that it is accompanied by substantive initiatives, close coordination with the United Nations, and the use of the European Union’s political influence on Turkey, so that Turkey abandons its unacceptable tactics regarding a two-state solution and returns to the agreed framework for a solution.
