November is a particularly important month for the Democratic Alarm, as two different internal party elections will take place within the span of just one week.
The first concerns NEDISY, which is holding elections to select new leadership following the election of its current president, Dimos Georgiadis, to the House of Representatives—and given that he cannot run again, having reached the term limit.
The elections for the new NEDISY leadership are scheduled for November 21, while the nomination process will take place on October 29.
One week later, on November 28, the polls will open to select the DISY candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
Two Candidates for the NEDISY Presidency
As for the leadership succession at NEDISY, so far two members of the current leadership team appear to be considering running for the presidency.
They are Konstantinos Georgiou and Raphael Zachariadis.
Konstantinos Georgiou currently serves as Deputy President of NEDISY, while Raphael Zachariadis is the organization’s Head of Local Committees.
Konstantinos Georgiou is a businessman from Astromeritis, a member of the DISY Political Bureau, and works for a corporate group; he is also active in the collective bodies of NEDISY, having previously run for the position of community leader in his village and been actively involved in the community’s youth programs.
Rafael Zachariadis, in addition to his party activities, works as a parliamentary aide.
As things stand now, however, according to reports, these two appear to be the candidates vying for the position currently held by Dimos Georgiadis.
The timeline for the two contests
The schedule that has been set is particularly packed:
- October 26: Submission of candidacies for the DISY nomination in the 2028 presidential election.
- October 29: Submission of candidacies for the presidency of NEDISY.
- November 21: Elections for the new leadership of NEDISY
- November 28: DISY’s Pan-Cypriot Electoral Assembly to select the party’s candidate for the Presidency of the Republic.
The timing lends November particular political significance for DISY, as the two processes are taking place very close together and during a period of intense internal party activity.
