DISY issued a statement regarding appointments to parastatal organizations, in response to the statement by Deputy Government Spokesperson Yiannis Antoniou.
Specifically, it notes that, “The Democratic Rally has chosen, until now, not to take a position on appointments to semi-governmental organizations, allowing the process chosen by the President of the Republic to run its course, despite our disagreement regarding the philosophy and operating procedures of the Advisory Council. After all, we respect the executive branch’s right to follow whatever procedure it deems most appropriate.”

The announcement in its entirety
The Democratic Alarm has chosen, until now, not to take a position on the appointments to semi-governmental organizations, allowing the process chosen by the President of the Republic to be completed, despite our disagreement regarding the philosophy and mode of operation of the Advisory Council. Moreover, we respect the executive branch’s right to follow whatever procedure it deems most appropriate.
Today’s statement by the Deputy Government Spokesperson regarding DISY is unfortunate. The Democratic Alarm neither demanded nor sought the appointment of party officials.
The essence is simple: the Advisory Committee makes recommendations; the Government decides. And, as he himself admitted, 21 of the 95 appointees were not even included in its recommendations.
The question is whether the process actually reinforces meritocracy or serves as a fig leaf for predetermined government choices.
