In recent days, Democratic Alarm officials have been in the process of choosing a side.
Some publicly and others behind the scenes are siding with either Averof Neophytou or Giorgos Pamboridis, both of whom will appear at Pindarou Street on October 26 to submit their candidacies for the party’s presidential nomination.
Of course, for this to happen, the list of 500 supporters must first be finalized, 100 of whom must be from the party’s leadership.
Averof Neophytou publicly stated yesterday that he is ready, while the process is proceeding as planned for Giorgos Pamboridis as well, who gave party members the opportunity to sign his candidacy online.
Response to Averof
Averof Neophytou’s decision to call on the Cypriot government to propose lifting energy sanctions against Russia remains a topic of discussion at Pindarou today.
The party leadership responded immediately to this position.
Democratic Alarm
“Mr. Averof Neophytou’s suggestion to reconsider the energy sanctions is his personal proposal within the framework of public political dialogue. Democratic Alarm, however, considers it critical and imperative to stand in solidarity with our European partners on major international issues.”
Speculation
As for the race toward the presidential election—beyond DISY, of course—all eyes are turning in two directions.
On the one hand, what will DIKO do? That is, whether it will remain aligned with Nikos Christodoulides or seek other political allies.
On the other hand, there is AKEL’s next move, as it seeks the most suitable candidate to maximize its chances of an electoral victory after 20 years, capitalizing on the fragmentation of the center-right political spectrum.
