The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, announced two new government initiatives to support cancer patients, during his remarks at the 22nd “Pink Figures” Walk, which took place on Saturday at the Old GSP.
The first measure involves the payment of a monthly allowance to vulnerable patients—initially those with breast cancer—for the duration of their treatment and up to 12 months after its completion.
The second measure concerns the provision of free transportation for patients, initially from remote areas of the Nicosia District to oncology centers.
“These are your own suggestions, to which we are, of course, responding,” said the President of the Republic.
Mr. Christodoulides noted that issues related to cancer begin with diagnosis, the quality and speed of treatment, emphasizing that these cannot depend on a patient’s place of residence or financial circumstances.
At the same time, he referred to the need for a holistic approach, which would include rehabilitation, psychological support, as well as patients’ return to work and their daily lives.
He made special mention of the establishment of the National Cancer Institute and the appointment of its first Board of Directors, expressing his belief that these steps will contribute significantly to the adoption of a comprehensive approach.
As he noted, this approach should encompass prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, research, rehabilitation, and post-treatment follow-up.
The President described Europa Donna as a “partner” and “fellow traveler” of the State, expressing his conviction that this collaboration will be further strengthened through the operation of the National Cancer Institute.
In closing, Mr. Christodoulides made a special mention of Stella Kyriakidou, whom he described as “a symbol of this great family, Europa Donna Cyprus.”
“My dear Stella, we honor you and thank you for all you have contributed and continue to contribute,” he said.
