In a statement, EDEK expresses the view that the sacrifice of Tassos Isaac “tragically reminds us of who we are up against,” marking the 30th anniversary of his murder, emphasizing that the brutality of the perpetrators “will not be forgotten.”
The statement notes that Tassos Isaac, who was murdered on August 11, 1996, during an anti-occupation demonstration in Deryneia, embodied the struggle for freedom and that his death “shook the artificial and false sense of calm” of that era. It is added that his sacrifice continues to serve as a point of reference for the struggle against the occupation.
At the same time, the view is expressed that commemorative events and related declarations acquire substantive meaning only when accompanied by a concrete commitment to the goal of Cyprus’s liberation, and it is emphasized that this was the vision for which Tassos Isaac fought.
