When asked if he is removing himself from internal party procedures, he replied:
“Averof speaks, and I speak—in my humble opinion—on political matters, on all issues. I’ll speak again on the Cyprus issue. I’m in politics for the Cyprus issue. Without a homeland, there are no political parties. Without a homeland, there is no economy. Without a homeland, there is no future. And he is someone who, in the public eye, is considered one of the most experienced in economics. “In the economy, no matter how many mistakes are made, no matter how many bankruptcies we go through, you roll up your sleeves and rebuild it. If you lose your homeland, you never get it back.”
“The Cyprus issue is the priority,” he continues, expressing the hope that the president will take that small step—the very smallest step—so that we can see some progress tomorrow.
“And I said that if there is even one small step that leads to some progress, I believe that all political forces will support this effort. And we have time before the presidential election. There’s still a year and a half until the presidential election.”
When asked to specify what “small step” he meant, he stated that it could even be a minor confidence-building measure agreed upon in New York.
“Beyond that, if the impasse persists, I stated this long ago. I repeated it again yesterday: if the window of hope for a solution to the Cyprus issue remains closed, I will be a candidate. Period.”
When asked whether he would go through the party’s internal process or whether there is a possibility he might run outside of it, he reiterates that he has stated his political position depends on the Cyprus issue.
“I hope there will be progress and that we can all focus on resolving the Cyprus issue, leaving us time for the presidential election.”
When asked to clarify whether or not he will go through the DISY procedures, he responds: “If the Cyprus issue remains unresolved and I see that hope for a united homeland is fading, Averof will be a candidate.”

When asked to comment on Onoufrios Koullas’s reaction, who stated that he cannot conceive of Averof Neophytou running for office while bypassing the Democratic Rally’s procedures, he replied that he spoke in political terms and will limit himself to that.
He expressed hope that the “agenda of the discussion” will shift with the good news regarding developments in the Cyprus issue.
Earlier, Mr. Neophytou spoke about the Cyprus issue, noting that it is his priority, stressing that even a small step needs to be taken for progress to be made, and noting that he does not see either President Christodoulides or Mr. Erciyurman, willing to take that step.
Mr. Neophytou also spoke about the economy, inflation, and pensions.
