What They Discussed in New York
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The latest developments in the Middle East, the further strengthening of the excellent relations between Cyprus and Jordan, the strengthening of regional cooperation and relations between the European Union and Jordan, as well as developments regarding the Cyprus issue, were the focus of today’s meeting between the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, and King Abdullah II of Jordan, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to a written statement by government spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis.

During the meeting, they reviewed the latest developments in the Middle East and exchanged views on the prospects for de-escalation and strengthening regional stability.

As Mr. Letympiotis noted, special mention was made regarding the Republic of Cyprus’s steadfast and consistent support, within the European Union, for the further strengthening of EU-Jordan relations. In this context, the President of the Republic referred to the Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership Agreement signed in 2025, which Cyprus worked to achieve and actively supported, as an important milestone that creates strong foundations for further deepening cooperation.

In the same vein, the Republic of Cyprus extended an invitation to Jordan to participate in the EU meeting with regional partners, on the sidelines of the Informal European Council held in Cyprus last April, at which Jordan was represented by the Crown Prince, Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II.

At the bilateral level, the two leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to further deepening cooperation in areas of common interest and mutual benefit. President Christodoulides expressed his particular gratitude to King Abdullah for providing two firefighting aircraft and their crews to support Cyprus during this year’s wildfire season.

Cooperation in the field of civil protection—and specifically through the development of the Cyprus Regional Aerial Firefighting Station (CRAFS)—is one of the most tangible examples of the dynamism of bilateral relations. The President of the Republic also referred to Jordan’s participation in the first CRAFS regional workshop in Paphos, aimed at further developing it as a regional hub for cooperation, training, and the exchange of expertise.

The two leaders also reviewed the trilateral cooperation between Cyprus, Greece, and Jordan, following the 5th Trilateral Summit held last May in Amman. President Christodoulides thanked King Abdullah for his hospitality and emphasized the shared goal of further strengthening the trilateral framework through concrete actions and tangible results.

In this context, they also discussed the prospects for utilizing the India- the Middle East, and Europe (IMEC)—as a tool for enhancing regional connectivity and resilience—as well as the possibility of further integrating it into trilateral cooperation.

Finally, the President of the Republic briefed King Abdullah II on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue and the ongoing efforts to resume substantive negotiations from the point where they were suspended, based on the agreed framework and the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. President Christodoulides expressed his warm thanks for Jordan’s long-standing and consistent principled stance on the Cyprus issue.
