On Wednesday, AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou, held a meeting with the new President of EDEK, Sofia Christodoulou Makri, at the AKEL offices, and together they agreed to stay in touch regarding many issues of concern to citizens.
In remarks following the meeting, Mr. Stefanou said that it is wonderful to meet with young people like Sophia, especially young people who are politically engaged and take on responsibilities.
“In this particular case, it’s a very significant responsibility for a historic party like EDEK. A party with which we have collaborated in the past and more recently at various levels. It’s something we discussed briefly today, keeping in mind that this was an initial introductory meeting,” he said.
The AKEL Secretary-General said they took the opportunity to discuss both their shared struggles and their joint efforts for Cyprus, for society, and for ordinary people “that our two parties have shared in the past, in order to forge and open new paths and new horizons for such cooperation, always for the benefit of our country and ordinary people.”
“I wished the new President of EDEK good work and every success. And certainly, this meeting we had will not be the last—others will follow,” she said.
The EDEK President thanked the AKEL Secretary-General for his hospitality, noting that it is useful and beneficial to exchange views, “especially on social and labor issues.”
She added that they had held an initial discussion on issues of concern to society and agreed to maintain open communication.
“This certainly won’t be our first and last meeting,” he said.
