The President of the Famagusta General Hospital has outlined in a letter to the Minister of Health the need for immediate support for the Accident and Emergency Department (AED) at the Famagusta General Hospital in a letter to the Minister of Health, the President of the Famagusta District Self-Government Organization and Vice President of DISY, Yiannis Karousos, following repeated complaints from citizens about long wait times and inconvenience.
In his letter, Mr. Karousos states that he has recently been receiving complaints almost daily, with the situation being particularly difficult during the evening and late-night hours, when existing staff are called upon to handle a large number of cases under extremely stressful conditions.
Yiannis Karousos makes it clear that the problem does not lie with the efforts of the doctors, nurses, and other staff, but rather the need for adequate staffing and better coverage of the actual needs of the Emergency Medical Services (TAEP).
He makes special mention of the increased needs of the free district of Famagusta during the tourist season, when the population the hospital is called upon to serve is significantly larger than the area’s permanent population. As he points out, this reality must be taken seriously into account in the planning and staffing of the hospital.
Mr. Karousos calls on the Minister of Health to personally visit the TAEP, even unannounced in the middle of the night, so that he can observe firsthand the wait times, the number of cases, and the conditions under which the staff works.
At the same time, it calls for an immediate review of ways to strengthen the TAEP with additional medical and nursing staff, as well as the implementation of organizational measures that can substantially contribute to reducing wait times.
“We cannot wait for a serious incident to occur before we take action. In emergency situations, time can be critical, and the smooth operation of the TAEP is, first and foremost, a matter of safety and the protection of human life,” emphasizes the President of the Famagusta EOA and Vice President of DISY in his letter.
In conclusion, Yiannis Karousos asks the Minister of Health to personally examine the issue as a matter of priority and to provide information on the measures he intends to take.
