Greece remains on standby and will continue to contribute constructively to the next steps in the ongoing efforts of the UN Secretary-General, aimed at restarting talks on the basis of the agreed framework, under the auspices of the UN, according to a statement by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs marking the 52nd anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, emphasizing that a resolution to the Cyprus issue remains a top priority.
At the same time, it emphasizes that Greece pays tribute to the memory of the fallen and expresses its respect and gratitude to all those who, with bravery and self-sacrifice, defended the island, and that theCyprus issue remains to this day an international issue involving the illegal invasion and occupation of an EU and UN member state.
“In solidarity with the Republic of Cyprus, Greece is committed to seeking a comprehensive, mutually acceptable solution based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, with political equality between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, a single international legal personality, one sovereignty, and one citizenship, within the framework established by the UN Security Council Resolutions and in accordance with the European acquis and the principles and values of the EU. Greece remains on standby and will continue to contribute constructively to the next steps in the ongoing efforts of the UN Secretary-General, aimed at restarting talks on the basis of the agreed framework, under the auspices of the UN,” the statement reads.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that the resolution of the Cyprus issue, within the parameters set by the United Nations Security Council, the reunification of the island, and the lifting of the occupation of the territory of an EU member state, remains a top priority.
