The Parliamentary Committee on Energy conducted, today, a third visit to the construction site of the liquefied natural gas import terminal in Vasilikos, seeking an update on the project’s progress.
Representatives from the Ministry of Energy, DEFA, ETYFA, and the EAC participated in the visit.
As the Chairman of the Energy Committee, DISY MP Nikos Georgiou, stated at the start of the visit, the goal is to get firsthand information on what is happening, what the next steps are, and, above all, to demand timelines, the exact cost, and the specific date—day and year—of Vasilikos’s operation.
Mr. Georgiou described the project as “significant” and “of strategic importance” for the country, as it is linked, as he noted, to energy supply, energy security, low electricity costs, and the competitiveness of the Cypriot economy.
The Committee then visited the EAC’s Vasilikos Power Plant, where it met with the Board of Directors and the Director General of the Authority.
The focus was on the EAC’s strategic plan and planning, with the Committee Chair stating that “Our country’s electricity supply is sending out an SOS, which is why we all need to coordinate our efforts,” while the Energy Committee will monitor this process.
Mr. Georgiou linked the effort to address high electricity prices to the completion of the Vasilikos project, decisions regarding the power cable, and other energy options.
Regarding the ETYFA tender, the first phase of which was completed on September 9, and when asked if there were any bidders, the Committee Chairman replied that they are in Vasilikos to gather information.
At the same time, he mentioned that an announcement regarding the candidates is expected, noting that ETYFA has made public its intention to extend the deadline, following a call from international firms.
