AKEL has issued a new statement, launching a fierce attack on the government over appointments to the boards of directors of parastatal organizations.
AKEL, in response to statements by Deputy Government Spokesperson Yiannis Antoniou, accuses the government of cronyism and claims that it has turned these appointments into a “vehicle” for the 2028 elections.
The following is AKEL’s statement in its entirety:
Those in power are pretending not to understand the essence of the criticism leveled against them regarding the appointments they made to parastatal organizations.
They have labeled the Advisory Council an “emblematic reform,” but in practice they are further eroding public trust and the credibility of our institutions. Otherwise, they would not pretend that there is no decision—their own decision—requiring a full justification for every appointment not included in the Advisory Council’s recommendations.
The reality is that they promised a different style of governance based on meritocracy and transparency, yet in the end they surpassed even the previous government in cronyism.
They used these appointments as a tool for the 2028 elections instead of ensuring they served the public interest.
