At least three days before UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ historic visit to Cyprus, his Personal Envoy, María Ángela Olguín, is expected to arrive on our island to lay the “groundwork” for the UN chief’s important visit to Nicosia.
Appearing as a guest on the Alpha News program, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis did not rule out the possibility of meetings between Ms. Olgin and the President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides, and the TurkishCypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.

However, he noted that Ms. Olgin’s associates are permanently “stationed” in Cyprus and that he may be briefed by them on developments during official meetings.
When asked about the objectives of the UN Secretary-General’s visit, Mr. Letympiotis replied that they are focused on assessing the progress made so far in the efforts to resume talks on a solution to the Cyprus problem, as well as on the announcement of a new Informal Multilateral Conference.

Mr. Letympiotis explained that Nicosia is satisfied with the outcome of the intense momentum in the Cyprus issue, noting that the Republic of Cyprus is not alone in this effort, a fact that has become evident from President Christodoulides’ contacts over the past few months.
Regarding the new settlement plan reported in the international media, Mr. Letympiotis emphasized that new ideas or “out-of-the-box” ideas that fall outside the agreed-upon framework are out of the question, a point strongly reiterated by the international community.
