The Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, referring to the “security concerns of the Turkish Cypriot community” while speaking at ceremonies held today in Maratha, Santalar, and Aloa, noting that “we will never give up our equality, our security, and our rights on this island.”
Ceremonies were held at the memorials in Maratha-Santalaris and Aloa, where wreaths were laid and a moment of silence was observed in memory of the victims.
In his speech, Mr. Erhurman, among other things, linked the events of 1974 to the Turkish Cypriot community’s current security concerns, stating that these “must be assessed in light of what happened in the past.”
He added that the Turkish Cypriot side will continue to defend the community’s struggle on every platform and keep the memory of those events alive.
In his message marking today’s anniversary, the “prime minister,” Ounal Ustel, stated that for Turkish Cypriots, August 14 is a day on which “heroism, resistance, and deep sorrow” coexist.
He added that Turkish Cypriots continue today, with Turkey’s support, on their path “with the same determination.”
