The EAC’s planning for storage systems at critical points in the grid—which will help reduce curtailments of renewable energy generation—is “underway.”

An information report on the massive project being promoted at the Vasilikos power plant is currently before the Environmental Authority; with an estimated cost of 118.5 million euros and a total capacity of 250 megawatts.

“So far, we have obtained the relevant construction permit from CERA, and we are awaiting the evaluation by the Department of the Environment to assess our application for a zoning permit.”
Christina Papadopoulou – EAC Press Officer

Based on the preliminary design, the storage system will consist of lithiumiron-phosphate batteries, which are characterized by a long life cycle ranging from 7,500 to 10,000 charge-discharge cycles, high thermal stability, safety, and reliability.

Provided the necessary permits are secured and no unforeseen circumstances arise, the project is expected to be completed in October 2028.

Commercial operation of the storage system at the Dekeleia station—which will cost approximately 33.7 million euros and have a capacity of 80 megawatts—is expected to begin earlier.

“The contract was awarded in February 2026, and the system is expected to begin commercial operation in about a year.”

The licensing process is also underway for the storage system at the Moni Power Plant, with an estimated cost of 50 million and a total capacity of 100 megawatts.

“A construction permit has been issued by the competent authority, the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority, and an application has been submitted to the independent Cyprus Transmission System Operator for thethe approval of the connection terms. At the same time, an assessment of the environmental impact report and the issuance of the environmental opinion by the Department of the Environment are pending.”

At the same time, the EAC is examining suitable locations for the installation of smaller hybrid storage systems.
