President Nikos Christodoulides was briefed by Kaya Kalas on the meeting she had with the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, as the President himself stated in remarks to reporters while attending an event organized by the Neapolis Olympiada Association in Nicosia. When asked specifically about Mr. Fidan’s meeting with Ms. Kallas in Brussels, the President of the Republic said, “We have been briefed by Ms. Kallas on everything that was discussed. Some messages were conveyed that we have heard before; I want to be completely honest with you—everything will be proven in practice. I consider Ms. Olgin’s mission to be important, especially given the timeframe we have ahead of us for the UN Secretary-General’s visit, and I hope positive results will emerge toward the resumption of talks. But we have to see how this plays out in practice, and in practice, at the end of the day, we will all be judged—including, of course, myself.”
In response to a journalist’s remark that Mr. Erhurman said yesterday that he had received a message from Ms. Olgin stating that the President had accepted the rotating presidency, the President of the Republic said that “Our positions are clear regarding the rotating presidency. Yesterday, Mr. Erhurman said what you have very aptly mentioned; in a previous interview with the Greek Cypriot press, he said that we do not accept the rotating presidency and that this is the reason for the failure to resume talks. So, I think you should address this to Mr. Erhurman.”
When asked whether there would be joint actions with Athens regarding the Turkish-Libyan memorandum, the President of the Republic said that “We are in constant contact; today I spoke with the Prime Minister of Greece, and we exchanged views on the next steps. At the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs is in constant contact with his Greek counterpart, and we are also in contact at the European level, taking the necessary actions—away from the public eye—to ensure that sovereign rights are safeguarded, always in accordance with international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, in cooperation with our partners.”
