“We are proud to be Cypriots,” said the president of the Direct Democracy party, Fidias Papanagiotou, on Thursday, thanking all the soldiers who serve their country and defend the Cypriot people.
In remarks made after the military parade in Nicosia marking the Republic of Cyprus’s Independence Day, Mr. Papanagiotou noted that “Today marks 66 years since the founding of the Republic of Cyprus.”

He thanked the President of the Republic and the Minister of Defense, noting that “the parade was spectacular.”
“A special thank you to everyone who marched in the parade, and thank you to all our soldiers who serve their country and defend us, the Cypriot people,” he added.
Mr. Panayiotou mentioned that he, too, had marched in the parade in the past, “almost every year.”
Finally, he wished everyone “Happy New Year.”
