The Independent Anti-Corruption Authority is conducting a new investigation into a former member of parliament for alleged fraud and embezzlement through a nonprofit organization, which he founded himself and of which he is the sole shareholder.
Investigation by experienced legal experts
According to a front-page report in “Politis,” the Authority has already appointed the former president of the Family Court, Sotiris Liasidis, and attorney Nikolaos P. Konstantinou as investigators. These are two experienced legal professionals who had also led the investigation into former EDEK president and former Member of Parliament Marinos Sizopoulos.
According to the newspaper, the summoning of witnesses has already begun, including parliamentary officials as well as civil servants from various ministries. The former member of parliament is expected to be the last to testify.
Timeline of the Case
The company in question is alleged to have received a total of approximately €1.3 million from European and national funds. According to the same reports, the Anti-Corruption Authority, after examining the relevant complaints and the evidence presented to it, determined that there are grounds for further investigation, in order to determine whether there was any misuse of funds managed by the nonprofit organization that were allocated for a specific purpose.
Meanwhile, the leak comes from Poyatzis…
The Anti-Corruption Authority does not comment on the details of a case under investigation before the investigation is completed, Transparency Commissioner Haris Poyatzis told CNA, in response to a report in the newspaper “Politis,” which reported on an investigation into a former Member of Parliament regarding possible offenses of fraud and embezzlement through a nonprofit organization.
When asked about this, Mr. Poyatzis stated that, in order to protect the investigative process, the Authority does not comment on the details under investigation until the findings are finalized.
