The process of resuming surveys for cable laying in the Eastern Mediterranean appears to be in its final stages. According to ERT, the French-flagged research vessel “Abeille Marengo” (Abeille Marengo) has set sail from the port of Naples bound for Heraklion, where it is expected to arrive on Tuesday, October 27.
The vessel’s contractor, Nexans, has requested a permit to conduct underwater surveys—oceanographic and bathymetric—between Crete and Cyprus to lay the GSI cable.
Once the ship arrives in Heraklion and preparations are complete, it will await the issuance of the NAVTEX before beginning the surveys. According to information from ERT, the NAVTEX will be issued in early November.
It is added that on Friday afternoon, the other research vessel, the KOBI RUEGG, set sail from Heraklion, which will begin surveys in roughly the same area of the Greek continental shelf for the laying of the other telecommunications cable connecting Saudi Arabia with Greece, for which the Heraklion station has issued a NAVTEX valid from October 23 to 30.
