Focusing on the European economy, financial stability, and the challenges facing the global economy, the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) of the European Parliament to Thailand has concluded, with the participation of MEP Michalis Hatzipantelas (DISY/EPP).
The mission took place in Bangkok from October 14 to 16, 2026, as part of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, with the dialogue focusing on critical issues concerning the trajectory of the European and global economies.
Michalis Hatzipantelas’s participation is part of the European Parliament’s active engagement in international economic processes, at a time when fiscal challenges, changes in financial markets, and new technologies are influencing the economic policies and growth prospects of member states.
During the mission, meetings with senior officials from the IMF, the World Bank, and European economic institutions were of particular importance.
Among the most significant meetings were discussions with Alfred Kammer, Director of the IMF’s European Department, on Europe’s economic outlook, as well as with European Executive Directors of the IMF on international economic developments.
Also significant was the meeting with Pierre Gramegna, Managing Director of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), which focused on issues related to financial stability in the eurozone.
At the same time, discussions with Michael Kremer, Chief Economist of the World Bank, focused on the global economic outlook and development challenges.
The Implications for Cyprus
Referring to the significance of international economic developments for Cyprus, Mr. Hatzipantela emphasized that “Substantive participation in the European dialogue is crucial for safeguarding Cyprus’s economic interests. The decisions and trends taking shape at the European and international levels directly affect our country’s economic environment, businesses, investments, and growth prospects.”
