The Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, and asserts that the Secretary-General shares his position.
“Mr. Guterres responded to our letter dated August 28, regarding his initiatives on issues such as the cancellation of events and festivals, as well as the Barcelona event, by the Greek Cypriot side.”
In his reply dated October 16, 2026, Antonio Guterres, according to a post by Tufan Erhurman:
“Noted our concerns regarding developments affecting our cultural, sporting, political, and diplomatic activities.
He noted that his initiatives run counter to his calls for efforts aimed at strengthening mutual trust and courage.
He emphasized that actions that hinder confidence-building are not consistent with our joint efforts.”
Tufan Erhurman continued:
“Our goal is to contribute to the implementation of new confidence-building measures, as the Secretary-General has always emphasized, by creating “favorable conditions for the launch of a process that will lead to a lasting solution.”
In our view, the term “actions that hinder confidence-building” is inconsistent with this effort, as defined by the Secretary-General.
It is important to us that Mr. Guterres shares this view, which we have expressed repeatedly in the past.
We hope that the Secretary-General’s letter will serve as a guide for all those who wish to assess and address actions aimed at isolation, by obstructing the implementation of decisions already announced by international organizations, as well as by hindering confidence-building. At the same time, we hope that it will serve as a guide for those who work tirelessly to bring the world into contact with our people.
