AKEL is organizing a protest this coming Monday outside the Ministry of Finance against rising prices and, in a statement, is calling on calling on everyone to amplify the voice of society alongside the other organizations of the popular movement. “Society,” it notes, “cannot remain a bystander in the face of the government’s provocative apathy.”
“What else needs to happen in this country for the government of Nikos Christodoulides to realize that rising prices have crushed the people? How high must fuel and electricity prices rise, and how much must the cost of basic goods increase, before it takes steps to support society? “The question is not ‘whether’ measures are needed, but what those measures should be,” AKEL states in its announcement, “and insists that a comprehensive plan to support society is needed, given that other European Union countries are already taking emergency measures to address the massive surge in inflation.”
Specifically, the party is calling on the government to take measures to:
- A permanent reduction of the VAT rate on electricity to 5%.
- Eliminate double taxation on fuel and implement social policy measures to limit the burden caused by sharp increases in fuel prices.
- Developing a support plan for home heating before winter sets in.
- An energy-efficiency retrofit program for older homes to help households consume less energy.
- Targeted support to provide relief to those facing serious difficulties with housing costs due to increases in interest rates and rents.
- Adjustment of the Universal Basic Income (UBI) amounts to reflect changes in the cost of living.
- Guarantee basic rights for workers, particularly those earning the minimum wage.
Society cannot remain a bystander in the face of the government’s provocative apathy, the party emphasizes, and calls on “to everyone to join the protest organized by AKEL —together with the other organizations of the popular movement—on Monday, September 28, at 6:00 p.m. outside the Ministry of Finance.”
“Inflation is not tackled with words but with action,” the statement concludes.
