On the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the coup d’état of July 15, 1974, EDEK condemns the event as a “heinous national crime,” attributing responsibility to the Athens junta and EOKA B for the overthrow of the legitimately elected President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios.
A related statement notes that the coup paved the way for the Turkish invasion and the long-lasting consequences that Cyprus continues to experience. Special mention is made of the resistance put up by members of EDEK against the coup plotters, arguing that, under the leadership of Vassos Lyssarides, they constituted the only organized force that resisted the coup.
EDEK states that Cyprus continues to suffer the consequences of the 1974 betrayal and declares that it will continue the struggle for the liberation and reunification of the homeland, with the aim, as it says, of vindicating the dead and ensuring a safe, democratic, and free future for future generations.
