During the meeting on August 26 between the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, they are expected to discuss the extent to whichthe Turkish Cypriot side intends to make progress on confidence-building measures (CBMs), particularly regarding crossing points, according to information obtained by CNA.
Competent sources told KYPE that, during the meeting between the two leaders on August 26, a discussion is expected to take place on whether the Turkish Cypriot side intends to make progress on the CBMs, particularly regarding the crossing points. As noted, this discussion has already taken place in the presence of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and there is also a proposal submitted by the Secretary-General, to which the Greek Cypriot side has responded positively.
Negotiators from both sides are expected to meet to prepare for the August 26 meeting, the same sources reported.
Regarding the expanded meeting on the Cyprus issue, the same sources noted that efforts to prepare on the substance of the matter must continue. Points of convergence are already being documented and will be shared with all parties involved —on both sides in Cyprus and to the guarantor powers—and it is subsequently expected that the Secretary-General will proceed to convene the expanded meeting. As mentioned, it is estimated that it will be a matter of weeks before the points of convergence are provided to the parties involved.
It was noted that the goal is to reach a decision at the expanded meeting to begin talks.
It is recalled that the UN Secretary-General announced, following his joint meeting with President Christodoulides and Mr. Erhurman, on July 29 in Nicosia, that he had decided to convene another 5+1 meeting, following appropriate preparation regarding confidence-building measures, methodology, and substance, taking into account the common ground that has already been achieved.
