“I really can’t imagine something like that.”
This is how DISY Spokesperson Onoufrios Koulla responded to the possibility that the former President of the Democratic Rally, Averof Neophytou, might run in the 2028 presidential election without going through the party’s internal procedures.
Averof Neophytou, from the studio of the show “Aichmes” yesterday, virtually announced his candidacy for the 2028 presidential election, stating that his decision would be formalized after his trip to New York.
“God forbid that this weekend turns out to be dark, gloomy, and hopeless, with not a leaf stirring—if that happens, Averof will be a candidate. If things start moving, we must all stand united behind whatever leadership emerges so that we can see the glimmer of hope leading to a solution to the Cyprus problem.”

His statement came two days after Anita Dimitriou made public her intention to DISY officials to seek the party’s nomination.
“I cannot imagine—not being a candidate through DISY’s internal party procedures—it is impossible for me to think otherwise. What I’ve always said is that we’re an open party; anyone can run for office. We made that clear two years ago, when the constitutional convention took place. The decision to expand democracy—that all members will have a say—was made almost unanimously, so that the result will be fully respected. We are proud of these processes; our members have no reason to worry.”

Would DISY, then, be surprised by the possibility of Averof Neophytou running as a candidate in the presidential election, but not through the party’s internal procedures? When asked, Onoufrios Koulla replied, “Extremely so, to the greatest degree,” and said he could “not even imagine” such a thing.
