A State Department spokesperson emphasized U.S. support for energy security and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean in a statement to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), following the bipartisan resolution in Congress regarding the Great Sea Interconnector.
“The United States supports energy security and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, including through the Eastern Mediterranean Energy Center,” said the State Department spokesperson.
“The Trump administration remains committed to strengthening key energy partnerships that enhance global energy security and promote a safer and more prosperous future, with energy self-sufficiency for the United States and its partners,” he added.
The statement follows a letter from a bipartisan group of members of Congress to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the head of the U.S. Development Finance Corporation (DFC), in which they call on the Trump administration to prioritize the electricity interconnection between Greece, Cyprus, and Israel. The U.S. lawmakers link the project to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and to the United States’ strategic interests in the region.
The statement by the State Department spokesperson follows the agreement signed on August 5 for the French investment group Meridiam to become the majority shareholder in the company established to implement and finance the project.
