In response to criticism from political parties that want President Christodoulides to continue his election campaign, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis addressed the issue during an appearance on the Alpha News program.
“As for what is being criticized—what the political forces are criticizing the government for—the right of every political force to take the position it deems appropriate is fully respected. Allow me to point out the paradox—the political paradox— in the claim that a President of the Republic is implementing policies that affect the very fabric of society because he is in the midst of an election campaign, while those same political forces criticize the government for not taking more measures.”
“They should at least meet with one another, decide on the approach they should take, and at the very least have a consistent vision and stance,” he continues, emphasizing that the government will not stop.
“How early we’re entering an election campaign. The executive branch—the government—no government in any country— 17 months before an election, stop implementing policies, making decisions, or submitting bills to Parliament simply because any such action would be considered pre-election campaigning.”
When asked to comment on statements made by others—such as those who have been “shorn”—Mr. Letympiotis referred to the achievements of the current coalition government.
“We must finally make a decision. Should the government proceed with paying additional installments to those affected by the haircut, or should the government halt payments until they decide that the pre-election period has ended or that this is not a pre-election move?”
When asked about the meetings with DIKO, he replied that they are still taking place and noted that discussions will begin on the state budget, which will run a surplus.
Referring to the one-time payment of €200 as part of the measures to combat inflation, he states that it is a decision, not an announcement, and will be distributed to 53,000 beneficiaries.
Regarding the monthly allowance announced by the President for breast cancer patients, Mr. Letympiotis states that it is intended for vulnerable patients and that the relevant ministry has already begun the evaluation process, while noting that it will be expanded to include other vulnerable cancer patients as well.
