AKEL welcomes the appointment of the European Commission’s Special Representative on the Cyprus Issue and expresses the hope that he will contribute to the UN’s efforts to break the deadlock in the Cyprus issue, with a view to resuming negotiations for a solution on the agreed basis and within the agreed framework.
As the Left Party states in its announcement, “the appointment of a Special Representative of the European Commission, as on previous occasions, is intended to support these efforts, always within the framework of the United Nations, and this is significant under current circumstances, as the UN Secretary-General is exploring the possibility of convening aninformal expanded meeting on the Cyprus issue.”
AKEL takes this opportunity to underscore the critical importance, at this stage of the Cyprus issue, of safeguarding the entire negotiating acquis and the Guterres Framework, on the basis of which negotiations on the remaining issues must continue. It reiterates that the solution to the Cyprus problem, with an end to the Turkish occupation and the reunification of our homeland, is the only path to a future of peace and security for all of Cyprus and all Cypriots.
