The Democratic Party welcomes with satisfaction the appointment of the European Union’s Special Envoy for the Cyprus Issue, a development which, as stated by the President of the Democratic Party, Marios Karoyian, “strengthens the Union’s role in the effort to resume negotiations and creates additional momentum for the resumption of efforts toward negotiations on the Cyprus issue.”
In a written statement, the President of DIPA noted that “the assignment of this specific mission to a high-ranking European official, the Executive Vice-President of the Commission, Raffaele Fitto, demonstrates that the Cyprus issue remains on the European agenda and confirms the EU’s readiness to contribute more actively, always within the framework of the United Nations and the relevant Security Council resolutions.”
“As the Democratic Party, we have consistently maintained that the EU cannot remain a mere observer in a process that concerns one of its member states,” concludes Marios Karoyian.
