MEP Costas Mavridis denounced the actions of the occupying “authorities” in the European Parliament at the start of the plenary session.
Specifically, as Mr. Mavrides states in his complaint, at an event organized on June 24, 2026, at the European Parliament by MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk, representatives of the illegal separatist entity in the occupied territories of the Republic of Cyprus participated; they were presented as so-called “mayors,” giving the impression that they are legitimate local authorities in the occupied part of Cyprus.
“This constitutes a flagrant violation of European Union law and international law and undermines the binding legitimacy of the European Union on this matter, as well as the credibility of the European Parliament. Any attempt to elevate the status of the secessionist entity in the occupied part of Cyprus is contrary to international law, UN Security Council resolutions, and the positions of other institutions.”
“This is not the first time Mr. Kyuchyuk has taken such initiatives,” he adds.
“For this reason, I urge you to take all necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future and to ensure that activities on the premises of the European Parliament are fully in accordance with international law and the established binding legislation of the European Union,” concludes Mr. Mavridis’s complaint.
