DISY MP Nikos Georgiou emphasizes Averof Neophytou’s desire to see progress on the Cyprus issue, rather than the announcement of his candidacy, as he stated while speaking on the “Alpha Kalimera” program.
“The Democratic Rally has established procedures and clear provisions in the party’s bylaws, which the leadership must follow to the letter. And every politician and party official of the Democratic Alarm has every right to run for office and be judged by the party members.”

When asked to comment on Averof Neophytou’s statement, he said that what he would take away from it is the desire for progress on the Cyprus issue.
“I would focus on the first part of the statement, which was a political position regarding the Cyprus issue. The fact that he anticipates certain developments leads me to believe that Mr. Neophytou must have something in mind to make such a statement. He is a very experienced, distinguished politician who has dedicated years of service and is among the few who have consistently engaged with the Cyprus issue.”
Mr. Georgiou declined to comment on the speculation surrounding Averof Neophytou’s announcement.
“The Democratic Alarm is above individual figures. We must preserve the unity of the party and respect the collective decisions of the members of the Democratic Alarm.”
When asked whether they are concerned about Mr. Neophytou’s move and whether they will seek clarification, he states:
“Because I love and respect both Averof Neophytou, Anita Dimitriou, and George Pamboridis, it is my humble opinion that this is a matter of collective leadership and responsibility, so that the party may move forward as united and strong as possible toward the presidential election. Just as we acted with unity and dynamism in the last parliamentary elections—and saw the results—we must proceed in the same manner on the path to the presidential elections.”
