A joint letter to the Irish Presidency of the EU, ahead of the next phase of negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028–2034, was signed by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, along with the leaders of 16 other member states.
The joint letter emphasizes the need for the EU to have sufficient resources for its new priorities, while safeguarding funding for Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy. With regard to Cyprus, strong Cohesion and Agricultural policies mean balanced development, support for rural areas and the primary sector, and enhanced competitiveness.
Of particular importance is the common position of the 17 Member States, as expressed in the joint letter, that the total amount of the MFF, as set out in the Negotiating Framework agreed upon during the Cyprus Presidency, remains the strong foundation for the next steps in the negotiations on the new MFF, constituting a substantial recognition of the work and impact of the Cypriot Presidency in shaping the next European budget.
The goal is an ambitious, balanced, and adequately funded European budget, capable of addressing both Europe’s long-standing and emerging challenges.
