The annual report on the Schengen Area for Cyprus is expected to be presented to the EU Council in September, European Commission spokesperson Markus Lamer, noting that the assessment from the monitoring activity in December 2025 is expected to result in a positive evaluation of Cyprus’s level of technical readiness. A European source pointed out that this is not the final report on Cyprus’s accession to the Schengen Area.

“Cyprus’s accession to the Schengen Area will be a significant step forward for both the country and the European Union as a whole,” Lamer noted, confirming that yesterday, the European Commission adopted the 2025 Schengen Report, following a positive opinion from the member states in the Schengen Committee on June 26, 2026. According to the spokesperson, “the report is based on the Schengen monitoring mission carried out in December 2025 and concludes with a positive assessment of Cyprus’s level of technical readiness.”

As he added, “the Commission will continue to support Cyprus in its efforts to meet the necessary requirements and standards. The report we adopted yesterday will be presented to the Council in September,” he said. The report has already been forwarded to the European Parliament and the Council of the EU, but its official presentation to the Council will take place in September, he added.

“It is clear that decisions on when and how Cyprus will join the Schengen Area rest with the Council; however, the Commission’s position is clear. Cyprus’s accession to the Schengen Area will strengthen the common framework of rules, standards, and responsibilities governing cooperation within the Schengen framework,” Lamert concluded in his statement.

However, according to a European source who spoke to CNA, this report is by no means the final report on Cyprus’s progress toward joining the Schengen Area, as there are still outstanding issues that must be resolved as part of the ongoing evaluation process.
