EDEK is counting down to one of the most important elections in the Movement’s history.
The last few hours, however, have felt like a “battlefield,” with tensions running high, especially following Marios Hannides’ decision to withdraw his candidacy, accompanied by attacks on party officials aired on Alpha TV.

The clashes, however, are multifaceted, with the General Secretary of the Youth Wing attacking the president of the EDEK Youth Wing, Sophia Christodoulou Makri, whom she accuses of bypassing the Youth Wing’s collective bodies in the process of announcing her candidacy for the Movement’s presidency.
“Our rival, Sophia Christodoulou Makri, in pursuit of her personal goal of being elected President of EDEK (…) bypassed the collective bodies of the Youth Wing, avoiding any discussion of her personal decisions.”
Andri Dimitriou Steka – General Secretary of the EDEK Youth Wing
Reactions
However, yesterday’s comments by Marios Hannides on Alpha—shortly after he withdrew his own candidacy—continue to spark reactions.
Among those reacting is EDEK official and Mayor of Lefkara, Sophocles Sophocleous, who considers Hannides’ remarks unnecessary, as well as his decision to publicly declare support for another candidate—in this case, Koullis Mavronikolas.
“The statement and the public announcement of a prominent party official’s position have sparked unnecessary discussions, divisive comments, and a televised confrontation—none of which I believe anyone would consider beneficial to the party.”

Campaign Messages
The three candidates, however, are continuing their campaign at the party’s grassroots level, with messages of unity and the rebuilding of EDEK.
“The most important prerequisite is genuine unity.”
Koullis Mavronikolas
“Our effort is pure, sincere, and substantive.”
Sofia Christodoulou Makri
“EDEK members have the right to hear us out, compare us, and decide.”
George Kouttoukis
The elections will be held on Saturday, September 5.
