The feud between Odysseas and his successor is reaching a climax; he hints at revelations and makes pointed remarks about the President’s involvement

Andreas Papakonstantinou categorically denies the allegations; the government accuses him of being obsessed

The rift between the former and current Auditor General is growing ever wider. Odysseas Michaelides has announced that he will make revelations before the Parliamentary Audit Committee this coming Thursday, regarding the three cases that—as he claims—remain pending before the Audit Office and are linked to decisions in which the President of the Republic himself had a personal involvement or interest.

One of these concerns a public contract of significant monetary value, which—as he alleges—has been shelved for approximately 20 months by decision of his successor.

“I will present these three cases to them. They demonstrate that this country has suffered greatly due to the lack of oversight over the Attorney General. We cannot suddenly, in the year 2026, remember that there is still another unaccountable office—that of the Auditor General.”

“We’ve stopped the ‘drawers’”—the categorical response from Andreas Papakonstantinou, who emphasizes that from now on, anything submitted to the Auditor General is recorded electronically.

“I suspect one case, which I inherited from the time when Mr. Michailidis was in office. We requested some information. We’re in the final stages. He doesn’t interfere—I’m telling you this, and to the President’s credit, he’s very careful. We rarely speak with the President.”

“Mr. Michaelides has a tendency—I would even go so far as to say an obsession—to focus on President Christodoulides. The first question that comes to mind is: why didn’t Mr. Michailidis say this earlier?”
Konstantinos Letympiotis – Government Spokesperson

Creating Distance

Amid this explosive situation, which was sparked by Odysseas Michailidis’s request that the minutes of the Audit Committee’s most recent meetings be submitted to the Audit Committee, a request that Andreas Papakonstantinou refused, ALMA is preparing to submit a bill on Thursday to establish this group by law. This has provoked a strong reaction from the Auditor General, who argues that this would be unconstitutional.

“My compass is not Mr. Michailidis. I respect his work; I have not questioned it. My guiding principle is the Constitution.”
Andreas Papakonstantinou – Auditor General

Odysseas Michailidis argues that the proposed bill ensures the independence of the Auditor General.
